Areas of Interest:
planetary atmosphere and ionosphere; space physics;
intermediate- and small-scale ionospheric structures
Research Overview:
Dr. Wan currently works on the terrestrial and planetary ionospheres, with particular interests on the intermediate- and small-scale irregularities and their impacts on the terrestrial GNSS signal transmission. Beyond the Earth, the ionospheres of other planets also contain interesting irregularities. For instance, the ionospheric irregularities on Mars show distinct features which might be predominantly driven by the highly inhomogeneous magnetic field topology known to cluster over the southern hemisphere of the planet. The observations of ionospheric irregularities beyond the Earth open a new corridor that can improve our knwoledge of the driving forces of the ionospheric structures under a variety of internal and external conditions. Thus Dr. Wan’s recent works also involve a comparative investigation of ionospheric irregularities between the Earth and Mars.
