Zewen Chen went to the University of Science and Technology of China for an exchange visit

Since July 2021, Zewen Chen has been on a one-year exchange visit to Zhenpeng Su's group at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in the School of Earth, Earth and Space Sciences. His study is about the magnetic dip structure caused by proton injection during geomagnetic storms and its effect on the electron flux in the radiation belt. This work shows that the Betatron and Fermi deceleration is the main mechanism leading to the dramatic reduction of electron flux in the radiation band in the "magnetic depression" when the first and second adiabatic invariants are conserved, through a combination of numerical simulations and multi-satellite observations. The research results are an important addition to the early adiabatic transport theory and contribute to our further understanding of the coupling mechanism between the ring current and the radiation belt. The work has been submitted to Geophysical Research Letters, a leading international journal, and is currently under review.
