  1. About the School of Atmospheric Sciences, SYSU

The School of Atmospheric Science of Sun Yat-sen University was founded in October 2015, which is located in the Zhuhai Campus. It is formerly known as the Meteorology Department of the School of Geography, Sun Yat-sen University, which was founded in 1961. At present, a complete atmospheric professionals training system of "Bachelor-Master-Doctor-Postdoctoral" has been established. The undergraduate program involves two majors; the atmospheric science and applied meteorology, and five departments are established such as meteorology, atmospheric physics and chemistry, marine meteorology, space weather and cryosphere science. Postgraduate program involves five master's and doctoral programs in meteorology, atmospheric physics and atmospheric environment, climate change and environmental ecology, space physics and resources and environmental engineering.

Administrative Building – Haiqin No.2

The school of Atmospheric Sciences focuses on the development of major national strategic needs, such as national climate change, tropical marine development, marine power construction, the "Belt and Road Initiative" construction, Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area construction and deep space exploration. The research are mainly focused on two strategic directions i.e. "tropical ocean and its surrounding sea, land and air observation monitoring and seamless prediction system" and "early warning system for extreme climatic and ecological risks in key areas of the Belt and Road Initiative ". The school is focused on planning and deployment of land surface processes and biogeochemical cycle, climate change and sustainable development in key areas of the "Belt and Road Initiative", tropical and global atmospheric and marine science, natural disasters in tropical ocean and surrounding areas and atmospheric environment, space weather and comparative planetology. According to the main direction of the disciplines, the school has collaborated with domestic and foreign universities and the regulatory departments to build four provincial and ministerial-level research platforms (including one academician workstation), four departmental / school-level platforms and one international advisory body, which have had an important impact on the atmospheric science community.

With the unique geographical advantages of the Sun Yat-sen University's Zhuhai Campus, as well as the advantages of the platforms such as the "Sun Yat-sen University" marine science research and practice ship and the Tianhe-2 supercomputer, the school has given vigorous efforts to create a first-class team of atmospheric science talents, and has built an excellent talent training and support system for teaching and scientific research.
