The School of Atmosphere Sciences, Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), was established in October 2015, which was developed from the Meteorology Specialty of the Department of Geography established in 1961. The University expanded the Meteorology Specialty, established the Department of Meteorology in 1979, and started to recruit graduate students in Weather Dynamics. In 1986, the Department of Meteorology was renamed the Department of Atmosphere Sciences, adding Master Program of Climatology and Bachelor Program of Atmospheric Physics and Atmospheric Environment. It was approved to confer Ph.D.’s degree of Meteorology in 1998 and recruit Ph.D. candidates of Meteorology from the year after. The Department launched master programs in Atmospheric Physics and Atmospheric Environment in 2001, launched a Postdoctoral Program in Meteorology in 2009, and gained the authority to confer Ph.D.’s degree in the first-class discipline of Atmosphere Sciences in 2011. In October 2015, the University established the School of Atmosphere Sciences, which consisted of the original Department of Atmosphere Sciences, Institute of Environmental Meteorology, Center for Monsoon and Environment Research, Institute of Earth Climate and Environment System，and Guangdong Province Key Laboratory for Climate Change and Natural Disaster Studies.
The School of Atmosphere Sciences has now built a complete system of education and research from undergraduates to postgraduates, including two Bachelor programs for Atmosphere Sciences and Applied Meteorology, and three Master and Ph.D. programs for Meteorology, Atmospheric Physics and Atmospheric Environment, Climate Change and Environmental Ecology, respectively.
The School of Atmosphere Sciences will embark on its new journey in the Zhuhai Campus of SYSU. Colleagues who are dedicated in teaching and research in atmosphere sciences and students who are interested in the field are welcomed to join us.
